Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative Society - Shamsa Star Ornament
Shamsa (شمسة) means little sunburst and is also the name of a radiating motif found in Islamic art — a circular or star-shaped design with intricate rays extending outward, often used to mark the beginning of a new passage in the Qu'ran. This ornament captures that sense of radiance and harmony, adding warmth and cultural beauty to any setting.
Founded in 1981, the Holy Land Handicraft Cooperative Society (HLHCS) is a Palestinian artisan collective representing 35 member workshops specialising in olivewood and mother-of-pearl crafts. HLHCS also collaborates with local artisans and women’s groups to offer ceramics, tatreez, recycled glass, olive soap, and more. A guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organisation, HLHCS supports over 2,000 individuals by connecting handmade Palestinian goods to global Fair Trade markets. Each piece reflects a rich cultural heritage and a commitment to peace, justice, and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship.
